AirDryer Systems is an Irish owned company which has been set up to manufacture and distribute a range of clothes dryers suitable for any household or apartment called the Marilyn.
The Marilyn is an electrically operated air dryer, which, when placed under any type of clotheshorse / Airer dries all of the laundry, indoors, for less than €0.03. It takes its name from the famous image of Marilyn Monroe in The Seven Year Itch, standing on a subway grate as her white dress billows up in the draught from a passing train.
The scale of interest in the product has taken Daniel somewhat by surprise, although he says that he always had a hunch that people would want to buy a Marilyn once they saw the product. Many of these orders have been generated through what Daniel refers to as “real social media, by people who’ve been impressed with the product when they’ve seen it, and passed the word on to others”.
Ten years ago, Daniel, a design engineer by profession, applied the principle of that iconic Marilyn Monroe dress image to solving the problem of his rising electricity bills, which had soared following the birth of his four children due to more frequent use of the tumble dryer.
“We don’t have the weather for outdoor drying, and in our house, with all the kids clothes, we had to use the tumble dryer. The electricity bills were multiplying, so I decided to see if I could do something about it. It was something that I did for myself, and didn’t think about taking it further,” he said.
As the downturn began to bite, the consequent difficulties presented an opportunity, and so five years ago, he decided to go into business, AirDryer System Ltd was set-up and began developing the Marilyn Unit as a product.

The Marilyn unit is a slim, lightweight, easy to store appliance, designed to sit under any indoor clothes airer, which uses just 25 watts of electricity and dries clothes in a matter of hours, without condensation and with no additional heating. Its running costs are €13 per year, compared with the €250 that the average household will fork out every year for running a tumble dryer. As Marilyn’s six fans use cold air, all fabric types can be dried without any damage to your clothes. The Marilyn unit is now available in Dwyers Electrical, Soundstore and Bandon Coop and it can also be ordered online.
